What a barndominium actually is, done right

Engineered as a home, finished as a home.

A barndominium is a steel-framed home that uses the clear-span structure of a steel building to open up space a stick-framed house can't: vaulted great rooms, oversized garage bays that double as a shop, a floor plan that isn't boxed in by load-bearing walls every twelve feet. Built properly it is a fully engineered, fully finished custom home that happens to be framed in steel: real cabinetry, real trim, real finish flooring, and a structure stamped for your site's actual loads.

Why clients choose steel for their custom home

What the structure buys you

01

Clear-span space

Fewer interior load-bearing walls, more open living and shop space in the same footprint.

02

Snow and wind performance

Engineered red-iron and cold-formed systems built for Idaho and Montana winters, not adapted from a warmer-climate design.

03

Longevity and low maintenance

Steel doesn't rot, warp, or attract the pests a wood structure has to be protected against.

04

Speed to weathertight

Frame and envelope go up faster than comparable wood-framed construction, giving your finish crew more of the build season.

Real cabinetry, real trim, real finish flooring

Design and engineering, then permitting, then site work and foundation, then steel frame erection, then sheeting, doors, and windows, then full interior finish, including the cabinetry, trim, and finish flooring, all specified with you rather than defaulted.

Straight Answers

01

Sometimes, and not always for the reasons people expect. Clear-span steel can buy you more usable space per dollar of structure, but the finish level drives the budget more than the frame does. We'll walk the real numbers with you rather than quoting a rule of thumb.

02

Yes. The structural system doesn't dictate the exterior. Siding, roofline, window packages, and porches are design decisions, and we build to the design rather than to what a kit ships with.

03

On every project. Electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, cabinetry, and trim are part of the contract, not a punch list handed to you at the end.

04

We build both and we'll tell you honestly which fits your design, site, and budget, including when timber is the better answer.

The clear-span space of steel. The finish of a custom home.

Tell us what you're building and roughly where. We'll tell you whether steel is the right frame for it.
